Learning From Each Other: The Power of Mixed-Age Classrooms
Virtual Event: October 8th, 12pm ET

During the preschool years, development happens fast, and no two children in a classroom are in exactly the same place at the same time. Even among children born in the same year, there can be meaningful differences in language, independence, social skills, physical development and interests. In that sense, every early childhood classroom is a mixed-age—and mixed-stage—learning environment.
Join Jade Francis, Learning & Curriculum Manager at Vivvi, for a conversation about how mixed-age learning classrooms can help young children build new skills, deepen their own learning and grow more confident and independent. We’ll explore what mixed-age learning looks like in practice, whether a classroom spans a single birth year or multiple ages, and how skilled teachers create experiences that meet each child where they are while giving them opportunities to learn from one another.
We’ll explore:- How children learn from children: Why watching, imitating, explaining and teaching peers can build everything from language and problem-solving to self-help skills.
- The benefits of being both learner and leader: How younger children benefit from peer role models while older children reinforce their own skills, build confidence and practice leadership.
- How teachers make it work: How educators adapt activities, expectations and support for different developmental stages while creating one connected classroom community
